Affiliate Marketing sees the second highest growth figures for 2009 to £72.6 Million, up 38.2% on 2008.
Affiliate Marketing continued to play an important role in the growth of the overall online ad spend with a healthy growth of 38.2% to £72.6 million. In other related areas, Paid Search grew by 9.5% to reach a massive £2.15 billion, representing 60.7% of all online ad spend. The real success story of 2009 was online video, which saw a spend increase of 140% year on year, generating £28.3 million.
As the UK exited the recession, results showed that the second half of 2009 was increasingly healthier than the first, with ad spend increasing by £25.6 million to £1.78 billion between July and December. January to June ad spend accounted for £1.76 billion.
Guy Phillipson, Chief Executive Officer of the IAB said:
“In 2009 the advertising industry was hit hard but online has proved itself a winning medium, capturing a greater share of marketing budgets.
“In the past year we’ve seen some real success stories as search passed the £2 billion mark, and online video advertising experienced spectacular growth. And with sectors such as Retail and Consumer Goods increasing their spending on the internet we can look forward to a healthier 2010.”
2009 wasn't so great for the housing, automotive and job markets with a decline in online classified spend, with a 5.3% drop in investment to a 'measly' £677.4 million, down from £715.2 million in 2008.
